Scientists have found yet another risk of divorce of parents for a child's psyche. As it turned out, as adults, these children are more likely to think about suicide.
Medicine has long been established that the separation is a father and mother for the children severe psychological stress. Even more powerful than even the death of a parent, or the endless screams and scandals. These children are more likely to turn in on themselves, suffer from depression, become rough, irritable and aggressive.
It seems that time can cure any psychological pain. But in the case of parents' divorce this is not quite true. Scientists from the University of Toronto led by Professor Esme Fuller-Thompson followed the lives of 6,647 adults, of whom 695 parents divorced when they were children under 18 years.
These studies are published in the journal Psychiatry Research. It turned out that the men of the "divorced families," three times more likely to think of how to take their own lives, as compared to those of boys whose parents are divorced. In the case of women, too, the situation was alarming - the daughter of divorced parents is 83% more likely to think about suicide.
Connection between parents' divorce and suicidal thoughts was even stronger if families father or mother suffered from addiction to bad habits, or to dismiss his hands for a long time sitting without work.
"This study suggests that parents' divorce different effects on men and women - said Professor Fuller-Thompson. - It may seem strange, but the men of such families is much more likely to suicide Than women, even when taking into account other stress factors during childhood and adulthood, such as socioeconomic status, depression and anxiety.
