Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, confirmed previous suggestions that epsilon toxin can be a trigger for the development of multiple sclerosis   - Severe neurodegenerative disease, gradually leads the person to a disability, deprived of control over the body. Epsilon toxin is produced by strains of bacteria Clostridium perfringens, which can cause the exact same food poisoning.

Multiple sclerosis   is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, in which thinner myelin sheath of nerves. Today, nice to believe that the disease leads to the development of human genetic predisposition and the combination of one or more external factors. However, the "trigger" of multiple sclerosis are still unknown. Some time ago, the researchers suggested that the disease is triggered by epsilon toxin produced by normal bacteria, and now this view has received additional confirmation.

"We found evidence that epsilon toxin kills the brain cells that produce myelin - said study author microbiologist Jennifer Linden. - These cells are called oligodendrocytes. They die when begins the progression of multiple sclerosis. Thus, epsilon toxin could be the culprit the development of the disease. "

Development of neutralizing antibodies or vaccines against epsilon toxin could theoretically halt the progression of multiple sclerosis, as experts believe. (READ MORE)
