General anesthesia experienced in childhood, corrupts memory of a lifetime

In the new issue of the journal Neuropsychopharmacology authoritative published an article describing the negative impact of anesthesia on the brain of the infant. The authors experimentally proved that deep sleep in which there is loss of consciousness and sensitivity, short-term memory blocks baby, the effects of which persist for many years.

General anesthesia experienced in childhood, corrupts memory of a lifetime General anesthesia

To reach this conclusion, researchers conducted a study involving children aged 6 to 11 years. Experts have divided the children into two groups. The first group included those who are under the age of one year made general anesthesia And second, control, - who have never passed through the complex operations and, therefore, never needed anesthesia.

Volunteers have offered to pass a simple test to check the memory, but to cope with this task is not all.
"Children who do general anesthesia showed less ability to memorize and restore the missing parts of drawings, on average, 28% less," - the researchers reported.
The members of the first group are not inferior to their peers in the level of intelligence and did not have any behavioral characteristics.

Exactly the same experiment results shown in laboratory animals. All 33 rodent undergoing general anesthesia in the first weeks of life, had problems with memory, such as forgetting how smell certain products. The problem is they do not disappear with age, scientists guess that confirms that anesthesia is transferred in its infancy, is fraught with memory disorders for life.

For reference:
Short-term memory plays an important role in the formation of memories and learning.
"Unequivocal conclusions about the relationship of anesthesia in violation of the brain we still can not do, but the results of studies cast serious thinking. At least, on this basis we can confidently declare - If general anesthesia is not absolutely necessary, it is not necessary to do so as not to spoil the child future life ", - experts say.
