Vitamin A (retinol) Vitamin A (or retinol)   - A water-soluble vitamin, which is found in both animal and plant foods. If necessary, the body can synthesize their own vitamin A from beta-carotene .

The name of vitamin A was due to the fact that was the first discovery of vitamin, and so he was given the letter A. This discovery produced a group of independent scientists back in 1913.

Retinol is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means to assimilate essential fats. The body has the ability to accumulate vitamin A, so there is no need to constantly take vitamin complexes containing this substance.

There are two forms of vitamin A: Ready (retinol)   and carotene (pro-vitamin) . The latter method is converted into vitamin A as a result of certain chemical reactions.

Among the main functions of vitamin A are the following:

    • It is a good antioxidant
    • It regulates protein synthesis
    • Normalizes metabolism
    • It is important for healthy teeth and bones
    • It slows the aging process
    • Improves protection of the mucous
    • Protects against influenza, upper respiratory infections, colds, urinary infections
    • Retinol is essential for normal fetal development during pregnancy It provides adequate food embryonic
    • Participates in the development of steroid hormones
    • It is a means of prevention of cancer, and is also widely used in the postoperative period due to its strong antioxidant effect
    • Neutralizes harmful free radicals
    • Restores and maintains the epithelial tissue
    • It accelerates the healing of burns, wounds
    • It protects the membrane of brain cells
    • Used for prevention cardiovascular diseases
    • It is commonly used in dermatology and cosmetology
    • It plays an important role in the formation of new cells
    • Due to the development of pigment rhodopsin   It provides night vision
    • It supports moisturizing eye, protecting it from drying out
    • Vitamin A is essential for proper functioning immune system Providing control of bacteria
    • Protects against atherosclerosis

Vitamin A deficiency

Vitamin A deficiency is characterized by a number of symptoms: dry and peeling of the skin , Deterioration of night vision, dry, exfoliating nails, horny hair follicles, growth retardation in children, actinic mucous membranes.

Excess

Symptoms of excess retinol is an exacerbation of pancreatitis, lethargy and sleepiness, flushing the face, vomiting and nausea, pain in the lower extremities, headache, exacerbation of cholelithiasis. Thus, vitamin A - this is rather offensive vitamin to be taken strictly by dosage.

The main sources of vitamin A Liver, cod liver oil, egg yolks, butter, whole milk and dairy products, green and yellow vegetables, legumes, eggs, palm and sea buckthorn oil. Ensure that all the body's need for vitamin A entirely of food is very difficult, so doctors recommend at least 2 times a year to make preparations containing retinol.

Interaction with other substances

  • In combination with vitamin E protected from oxidation of retinol in the intestine and tissues. Thus it turns out that the lack of vitamin E will lead to a lack of digestibility of vitamin A, which means that they have to take complex.
  • Insufficient zinc content in the body to vitamin A does not move into its active form. This is due to the fact that zinc deficiency reduced protein synthesis which binds retinol, vitamin can result in poorly transported to tissues. Vitamin A also promotes the absorption of zinc by the body, this is due to their relationship.
